Brian will cover an introduction to historic periods of Cairo and to the city's sudden modern growth and sprawl; an overview of basic Islamic-era religious and charitable building types and furnishings, including the Arabic terms, and the traditional ownership and management of the properties; current impediments and challenges to historic preservation in Arab-Islamic Cairo, including failed past Arab Republic preservation efforts and future Arab Republic threats to Arab-Islamic Cairo; and recent successful historic preservation and heritage conservation projects in Arab-Islamic Cairo; implications for area conservation projects
