Exhibits 2008
May 2008 - Martha Jefferson Hospital Urbanism Studio by UVA School of Architecture - an
installation presenting the culmination of a semester-long
collaborative studio at the University of Virginia studying the
potential for redevelopment of the current Martha Jefferson
Hospital site. The students' work presents design and planning
perspectives that have evolved from intensive study of the site and
extensive collaboration with neighborhood residents, hospital
administration, developers and local government officials. >>Studio Booklet (large file: 32 MB) June 2008 - Festival of the Photograph | Stories from the Garden - This
audio & photo documentary project by Ross McDermott and Jesse
Straight tells the story of an urban garden started in
Charlottesville's 10th & Page neighborhood in 2007.![]() July 2008 - "Taking Place" by Locus -
a collaboration by architects Michael Wenrich and Robert Mantho that
pursues the making of architecture as an act of art in a specific
place. The two designers feel strongly that architecture should be a
reflection of and response to the defining physical and cultural
characteristics of a given site. Central to their continuing work is
the requirement for an active participant whose body and senses are
engaged to reveal primary spatial relationships. The work is
speculative, as they discover the goals and intentions of each project
and explore ideas in various mediums. >>LOCUS website August 2008 - Asylum & Acceptance - During the summer of 2007, Michael
Keller documented the experiences, hopes, and dreams of mothers,
fathers, students, political activists, gardeners, soccer players, and
entrepreneurs who have joined Charlottesville through the aide of the
International Rescue Committee. A
recipient of the Davis Peace Prize and a senior at College of the
Atlantic, Keller photographed and interviewed community members in an
attempt to foster a spirit of acceptance as well as recognize the
struggle of asylum seekers to pursue peace as they confront new customs
and cultural tensions.
