LOCAL SAVERS- Green moves for the big guys, and you too, at CCDC Published November 2006 in C-ville Abode
By Erika Howsare Sustainability loves company: If you're devoting half your mudroom to an
elaborate installation for sorting recyclables, it's good to know that local
governments and schools are doing their part too. You can check in on what City and County
governments, plus UVA, are up to on the environmental front – and pick up some
tips for your home – at the Charlottesville
Community Design
Center’s exhibition, “What Is Sustainability? City, County, UVA
& You through December 21.
Each of our
three biggest public institutions will use the exhibition to highlight its pet
programs designed to be green. Albemarle County, for example has put together a
display on the subject of the green roof on its McIntire Road office building. This will include some statistics tracking
the impact of the green roof on runoff and temperature.
As for
those of us who are merely running a household, we’ll be able to learn a bit
about using less energy at home from the exhibition’s listing of ways to
improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems, from steps that cost nothing
to larger renovation projects. The CCDC
is located at 101 E. Main Street.
